RTP vs volatility: pick the right slot

Two numbers tell you most of what you need to know about how a slot behaves: RTP and volatility. They're often confused, but they answer different questions. Understand both and you'll pick games that suit your bankroll instead of fighting it.

What RTP means

RTP, or "return to player," is the percentage of all wagered money a slot is designed to pay back over a very long run. A 96% RTP slot returns $96 for every $100 wagered across millions of spins — not in your session. It's a long-term average, and the missing few percent is the house edge. Higher RTP is generally better for the player, but on its own it tells you nothing about how bumpy the ride will be.

What volatility means

Volatility (or variance) describes how those returns arrive. It answers: will I get frequent small wins, or rare big ones?

• Low volatility — wins land often but tend to be small. Your balance drifts gently. Good for long sessions and stretching a bankroll.
• High volatility — wins are rarer but can be huge. Expect long dry spells punctuated by big hits. Good if you're chasing a large payout and can absorb the swings.
• Medium volatility — a balance between the two.

RTP is how much a slot pays back over time. Volatility is how wild the journey is getting there. You need both to choose well.

Matching a slot to your style
